Its that time of year again when the clippers are about to come out.... Absorbine - The horse world's most trusted name - has the following helpful tips to ensure a smart clip everytime!
- Before clipping, the horse needs to have a clean coat. Clipping a dirty coat results in blunt blades and trying to clip through dried on sweat will pull at the horses hair and make him very sore.
- Wash the horse off thoroughly if he
has got sweaty whilst being ridden.
It is a good idea to get into the habit of thoroughly washing the
head (avoiding getting water in the ears) and then drying it off with a
towel. This will ensure the coat is maintained free from sweat before you
start clipping.
- Adding a washing off lotion such as
Absorbine’s Liquid Embrocation to the water is also helpful for keeping
the coat free of grease and grime which again will help make the clipper
blades last as long as possible.
- SuperPoo from Absorbine is a great
shampoo with which to give the horse a bath the day before you clip
him. This must be done far enough
in advance of the clip that his coat will be totally dry before you
start. It’s not advisable to bath
horses if the weather is really cold.
- Another good tip for keeping the
clipper blades sharp for as long as possible is to spray the coat with Absorbine ShowSheen before you start clipping so the blades glide through the hair.
- Put a good quality oil in the horse’s
feed to help keep the coat shiny. Oils such as linseed and Soya can be
very effective.
- Remember to put rugs on as the
temperature dictates. There can be days even in the height of Summer where
horses out in fields will need a thin New-Zealand rug to prevent them
getting chilled.
- Use a good quality detangler such as
Showsheen Detangler Gel and use your fingers to comb through manes and
tails to avoid breaking hair.
