Jo and Holly Bates Looking Ahead To A Busy 2012

Following on from a very successful showing season in 2011, which saw Jo and Holly Bates competing at the Royal International Horse Show and Horse Of The Year Show, Absorbine sponsored, Team Bates have some new additions to their yard.

Pictured here is Spinway Ronan, a 5 year old grey Connemara stallion who is owned by Sarah Hodgkins. He arrived in the yard last Autumn to be broken in and Jo is now working hard to produce him for Novice Mountain and Moorland classes this year.

Another new addition to Team Bates for 2012 is 5 year old Novice Riding Horse, Thriller, owned by Alan Lintolt.

Comberton Clancy Is Supreme

Absorbine sponosred rider, Jayne Webber took the Supreme Horse Title at Horse Of The Year Show with Jackie Beatham and Carol Bardo's Comberton Clancy.

This was an amazing end to Clancy's first season, having already won the Supreme Horse title at the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead back in July.

We wish Jayne and Clancy the best of luck for the 2012 season.

Helen And Thunder Take November Honours

Helen Leather and Hodni Rex known as Thunder at home were convincing winners of the November Photo-Shows Online, Absorbine sponsored Best Turned Out class. This class has gone from strength to strength with once again a very high standard of entries.

Helen has owned the Section D Welsh Cob, Thunder for 12 years, she bought him as a three year old from Cathy Pearse of Uphill Welsh Cobs and is a relative newcomer to competing in PSO. Helen said "the thing I like the most about PSO is that the judging is so fair".

Thunder and Helen compete in In Hand and ridden showing, the pair have also done some side saddle. They have had many victories in showing classes, including Reserve Champion in the in hand Mountain and Moorland championships at Equifest last season. They also won 2 Championships at M.I.D.A.R.C National Championships last year.

Helen has 5 horses and ponies and spends her time looking after and riding them as well as maintaining the 22 acres the Leather family own. Helen said "I haven't used Absorbine products before but I am really looking forward to trying my prize out!"

Sophie and Sam take the PSO October Class

Sophie Brown and her stunning Welsh Cob X, Sam The Man have won the October PSO, Absorbine sponsored Best Turned out class at the first time of entering a PSO class.

Sophie has owned Sam for a year, she said "I saw the advert for him on the internet and he caught my eye immediately, but he was far more money than I could afford. The advert said he was only for sale so the owners could concentrate on RoR and Ex-Racehorse classes. I had a beautiful ex-racehorse at the time so I sent them an email offering a part exchange, which they agreed to and Sam is now mine."

Sam is now 7 years old and has had a successful season with Sophie showing in ridden and in hand classes. They have taken part in Traditional Gypsy Cob Association classes and the British Skewbald and Piebald Association classes. Sophie said "I like PSO though as it gives me the chance to compete when its not possible to go to a competition."

Sophie works at Kempton Park Racecourse in security and as a steward. She combines this with producing show horses, some of which she owns herself and others which are produced and competed for owners.

Sophie said "I regularly use a range of Absorbine products and I think they're FAB! The products I use include SuperShine, both clear and black, ShowSheen and SuperPoo shampoo".

Quest Wins September PSO Best Turned Out Prize

The September Photo-Shows.co.uk Absorbine sponsored Best Turned Out Class was as competitive as ever. Our worthy winner was Kerry Dawson with her two year old Welsh X Arab Trebinshawn Casino, known as Quest.

Kerry has owned the 14.1 hh Quest for the last two years, she said "I was bough Quest for Christmas in 2009 by friends who I had helped get back on track in their personal lives. My first meeting with Quest was when I walked into his stable and was asked what I though of him, I said "he's cute!" I was then given his passport!"

Quest was very wild when Kerry first owned him, but the pair have been to lots of shows to compete in in-hand classes, this year the pair have been competing at county level. Quest has won and been placed at county shows and was Reserve Coloured Champion at the Trailblazers finals. Kerry went on to say, "most of the time I groom and then hand him over to my friend Lisa to show for me - I get a real kick out of watching my hard work shine and sparkle in the show ring!"

Kerry plans to get Quest licensed as a stallion next year, she said "you wouldn't think he is a colt, he has always been easy to train and handle, he is great on the road and good around my 8 year old daughter and my 12 year old son. I have had people ask if he is a mare or gelding!"

This was the first tine Kerry has entered PSO, she also has an entry in the November show which will hopefully be as successful. Kerry also enjoys banger racing, last season she was competing on the racetrack and this year she has concentrated on showing Quest.

A Worthy Winner

Eleanor Warren and her ex-racehorse Kyle of Lochalsh have won the August Photo-shows.co.uk Absorbine sponsored best turned out class at the first time of entering PSO.

Kyle as he is know has been owned by Eleanor for the past four years after an injury ended his racing career. He won five times on the flat whilst he was racing, but the 11 year old now has a home for life with Eleanor. He is very well bred and his maternal grand dam was a sister of the famous racehorse Shergar.

Eleanor said "Kyle goes otu showing every now and then as he is technically lame owing to his racing injury. Its a shame as he would have made a good Show Hack. He hates jumping these days so any form of that is out of the question. Other than that he bums around the field nannying the youngsters and stealing their food!"

Eleanor came across Kyle through her job as a work rider, she rode him out every day when he was in training. During the winter Eleanor also goes to the races with the horses and she said "our racehorses get turnedout with plaited manes and tails, quarter markers, the works, it was a very quick learning curve for me - to pull plait and trim a thoroughbred. (Eleanor had previously shown native ponies) Its an amazing job to do and I don't really consider it as a job, its more of a paid hobby".

Kyle is the first horse Eleanor has owned, although her family have always been into horses and breeding. Eleanor is quite a fan of Absorbine products, she said "spending my summers out on the show scene with mainly black ponies with the odd bay or chestnut thrown in I get through a lot of ShowSheen. Having tried pretty much every version of show shine on the market I think its safe to say I will always stick with Absorbine as it really does make my wee beasties gleam from head to toe."

Lucy and Wurth Win The July PSO Best Turned Out

The July entries for the PSO, Absorbine sponsored Best turned out class were the best yet! The worthy winner was Car Von Allure (Lucy) with 6 year old Worthington Coffield and his mother Tammy Kuiler.
The Kuiler family have owned Welsh Section A, 11.2, Lucy for 5 years. Tammy said "Lucy's owner and breeder needed to find a home for a pony very quickly, so a close friend was going to have the pony. When the lorry arrived - there were two ponies in it! As soon as I saw the little black pony, I knew I wanted her to be mine!"

Lucy was completely unhandled and unbroken when Tammy bought her. She has such a sweet nature though that Wurth was soon playing with her in his sandpit and now they are the best of friends.

Tammy said "Lucy and Wurth have been to the Pony Club and have been competing in shows for the last three years. They have done everything from gymkhanas to big shows. They are well known around the area for their fancy dress class outfits. They started off as Batman and Robin and now thcosume is King Neptune riding his seahorse. Hopefully by this time next year they will be ready to compete off the lead rein."
Tammy and Wurth have been competing in PSO since January this year. Tammy said "Wurth and myself and the beloved horses and ponies have become addicted to PSO and their beautiful rosettes and the wonderful competitors we have become friends with along the way". Tammy also owns a 4 year old pony, Holly who Wurth will ride when he outgrows Lucy. There is also a nine month old foal who has also already made an appearance on PSO!

Absorbine's Super Shine hoof polish is a firm favourite of Tammy's.

An Amazing Week At The RIHS

Absorbine UK sponsored riders Jayne Webber and Jo Bates enjoyed a hugely successful week at the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead last week. Jayne and Comberton Clancy took the accolade of being the overall Supreme Champion Ridden Horse.
Team Bardo qualified a magnificent 14 horses in total for the RIHS and 9 of these were in the top three in their respective classes. Comberton Clancy reigned supreme, he won the Large Riding Horse Class, then took Champion Riding Horse and then went all the way to take the overall Champion Ridden Horse Title. He is jointly owned by Carol Bardo and Jackie Beatham.

Other victories included a 1st with The Humdinger in the Coloured Cob class, another win with Berkeley Square in the Small Riding Horse class and 1st in the Heavyweight Cobs with The Keystone Cob, who also took the Reserve Champion Cob Title.

Jo Bates rode to victory in the Lightweight Coloured Ridden Horse Class with Theresa Waters' Shybont Navaho Girl - aka Daisy. She then went on to take the Reserve Coloured Ridden Championships.

Man Of Quality also took 4th place in the Lightweight Hunter class with Jo riding for owner Ruth Serrell. Jo and daughter Holly qualified five horses for the RIHS. Holly gave Buriana Cashel a great ride in the Large Hack Class for Eileen Jenkin.

Somethin Special Takes June PSO Best Turned Out

Lyn Archer and the stunning Somethin Special took the June Photo-Shows Online, Absorbine sponsored Best Turned Out class in style.
This Month's prize was a bottle of Absorbine favourite Refreshmint, great for the Summer Months to cool and refresh your horse.

Lyn has owned the lovely Somethin Special aka Solo for four years. This is only the second time the pair have entered PSO, but Lyn plans to continue to enter as she says "its such a popular show it means more to be placed - and the rosettes are amazing!"

Originally from Holland, the KWPN Solo is by Democrat and is now 12 years old. It hasn't all been plain sailing for the pair, Lyn competed him up to elementary level dressage and all was going well until he suddenly started behaving strangely. "One minute we would be trotting round nicely, then he would just lose the plot, start rearing, and bolting off in a blind panic" said Lyn. They had him checked all over and could find nothing wrong, except they feared he may have kissing spines. So Lyn sent Solo to a specialist vet in Scotland who concluded that Solo had damaged both his hind suspensory ligaments, he had to be on box rest for three months.

Despite fears from the vet that Solo would never compete to the level he was at, Lyn has taken it very slowly and is currently competing at prelim level. She said "I'm not going to push him too much and I'm very careful with what I ask of him but at the moment touch wood he is ok."

Lyn has a busy job in Tesco, this is where the name Somethin Special came from. "I work on the checkouts and as I speak to lots of people and they all know I'm horsey I started asking them all for suggestions of what we could call him! Judges have commented he suits his name very well."

Top Tack Cleaning Tips From Absorbine

Absorbine are not just known for their supremely effective grooming products, there are also fly control, hoof care, muscle care and even leather care products available and all of them match the exacting standards set by the renowned ShowSheen.

One of the unsung heroes is Horseman's One Step leather cleaner and conditioner. As it says on the pot, it cleans and conditions in one easy step - great either at home or when travelling to shows.
Here are some tips to help you keep tack in tip top condition:

Clean and check tack at least every two weeks - check the stitching and the leather for cracks and wearing thin.

Get saddles checked at least once a year and after a fall, just in case the tree has been damaged.

Clean mud and sweat off leatherwork as soon as possible, leaving dirt on leather will not do it any good.

Use Horseman's One Step to wipe away dirt and sweat in one easy step, ;eaving the leather soft and conditioned. It requires no water, just a damp sponge to work Horseman's One Step over the leather. Three cleaning agents remove dirt, sweat and salt while helping to restore a natural shine. Its great for use on saddles, bridles, boots, belts, luggage, shoes, handbags and most leather garments - in fact just about anything leather! It penetrates quickly, leaving no greasy residue and it will not darken most leathers.

Undo buckles and billets to clean thoroughly - these are the most vulnerable areas and the leather needs to be cleaned and checked.

To remove jockeys (the build up of grease and dirt) a traditional method is to rub them with a ball of mane or tail hair. Alternatively, use a damp sponge and Horseman's One Step and work in a circular motion.

Finally for really sparkling bits and stirrup irons, put them in the dishwasher - it really does work.

Team Bardos 2011 Success Continues

Comberton Clancy has been Champion on every outing this season. Recently at the Bath and West show, he took the title of Working Show Horse Champion having jumped beautifully and then continued on the following day to take the Riding Horse Championship. This is his first season at Moor Farm and Carol Bardo and Jayne Webber are "delighted" with the way he is going.

Team Bardo's cobs are also performing brilliantly as well. Darcey Bustle won her first Horse Of The Year Show (HOYS) cob qualifier at the South Of England Show. She also went on to be Champion cob at South Of England. The experienced coloured cob, The Humdinger has qualified for both the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS) and HOYS in both the cob and coloured classes at his first attempts.

The South Of England Show also saw the team pick up their 100th win so far of the 2011 season with Mrs Stennet's Time 2 Reflect. The four year old Time 2 Reflect won the HOYS Small Hunter Qualifier and has also qualified for the RIHS at the first attempt.

Hooray For Hooflex!

Charlotte Friend was the winner of our recent facebook competition for fans with a horse or pony that is kept barefoot to win a bottle of All Natural Hooflex and write a review on it. Charlotte has been using Hooflex on her pony Blue for the last few weeks, this is what she has to say about it:

Hooray for Hooflex! The product was brilliant, it really helped to strengthen Blue's hooves. The product was very easy to apply, and I could really tell the difference in my pony's feet within a week of using Hooflex. My farrier even commented on how well the product had protected my pony's feet. The Hooflex came with very clear instructions on how to use it and as the bottle is so large, it lasts you for ages! Hooflex has been incredible!

Blue had quite strong feet, but sometimes used to hesitate about walking across the yard car park to go out hacking, or along the track to get to the bridleway, as they are quite stony and sore on his feet, but as soon as I started using Hooflex he id not hesitate at all!

I compete him mostly in In-Hand Mountain and Moorland classes as he has just turned 4, but we have started doing a few ridden classes at local shows and we have done very well, as when I got him he had been turned away for most of his life. He is quite unique in competing barefoot in Mountain and Moorland classes as most others are fully shod, especially the Welsh ponies, which he is. I am definitely going to continue to use the product, it has made a considerable difference to my pony's feet. I wouldn't dream of using anything else on him!

May PSO Absorbine Best Turned Out Winner

Ashleigh Thornton and her lovely bay mare Bellasize Francil Alice are the well deserving winners of the May Online Photo Shows (PSO) Absorbine sponsored Best Turned Out Class.

Alice is 15.3hh and is a Shire X Cob. She is out of a Shire mare, the famous Bellasize Sovereign is her grandsire and she has turned out to be a miniature Shire/traditional gypsey vanner with plenty of feather. This is the first time Ashleigh has entered PSO and sahe says "I will definitely without a doubt be entering again. The ease of everything is great, friendly people, the amazing prizes and the idea of not having to wake up at 5am to wash Alice's feathers in preparation for a show!"

Ashleigh has had Alice on loan following an advert on horsemart. Ashleigh says "I got a phone call from a friend telling me Alice was for loan whilst I was at my grandmas funeral and knew it was something that was meant to be, so I rang the owner and told her a bit about myself and my experience with horses. She told me what she was wanting and that she had over 40 applicants for the opportunity so we discussed it and that night I went to ride there. Everything seemed to fit into place, the agreement was that I would help with all the jobs in return for free riding, and lessons from a top dressage and showing instructor. It's been great for me and I'm very grateful for this opportunity. In December we bought a Friesian colt to add to the collection of Ramsey, a 30 year old cob, Foggy, a six year old Hunter type and Alice, my favourite who had been there for only a few months before I met her. She was still very green last winter and she had a short tail. She came off a working farm in poor condition where she used to pull harows and chains all day long."

Alice has had a a big change in lifestyle, since Ashleigh has had her the pair have been to plenty of shows. Ashleigh said "we do well in best condition and turnout as well as classes based on conformation such as heavy horse and cob classes, we have also done two equitation classes and we did really well in both of them." Ashleigh is so grateful for this chance to take Alice off out and about "I thank Alice, her owner and my instructor for it all, my riding has improved so much and the best comment ever was 'you work so well together'! So far we have had a win at everu show we have been to and I couldn't be prouder of Alice, not just for the red rosettes but her constant efforts to please. The past six months really have shown what team work can achieve and she's a whole different horse now."

Apart from being the most hard working and willing to please horse Ashleigh has come across, "Alice will also try her best to eat anything: cake, bananas, crisps, crisp packets, chips, evevn the string you tie your competition numbers on with. She undid the bow right in front of the judge once at a show, luckily for us he found it really amusing which added to his positive opinion about her and we won the class! But she really doesn't like croissants and spits them out at you!"

Ashleigh is just finishing her GCSEs this summer, she believes though that "theres nothing like coming home from exams to a horse that will canter over to you, only to play catch-me-if-you-can when the headcollar appears and spending a good half hour watching her canter round the field and ending up sitting down in a field with a headcollar and lead rope tryinyg to convince her to come over."

Ashleigh is also a fan of Absorbine SuperShine Black and says "I wouldn't change it for the world, I swear by the stuff! I never look at any other products when buying hoof shine, I go straight into the shop and its at the till in seconds, I have also used Absorbine ShowSheen on previous horses and occasionally on Alice, although due to her breed/type she has to be as natural as possible so products are kept to a minimum, but I think it achieves a very natural looking gleam on the coat and adds that extra 'wow' for shows!"

Liz and Darcy are April Best Turned Out Winners

Liz Wardman, and her lovely grey mare Darcy are the well deserving winners of the April Online Photo Shows (PSO), Absorbine sponsored Best Turned Out Class.

Liz has owned Darcy for the past 12 years. She bought her as a three year old from the owner of her livery yard, who herself had bought Darcy in Ireland.

Liz used to take Darcy to lots of shows and pleasure rides all over the Midlands until a few years ago. Liz says "one day in a friend's trailer after doing some local jumping, Darcy started collapsing in the trailer on the way home. It was horrible and I will never forget the banging, for some reason that we will never understand she just kept going down and scrambling back up. At one point we we stopped and I stood in the trailer with her and she just leaned to one side and went down again. We had no choice but to get her out of the trailer, as soon as she was out of the trailer she seemed fine, so I tacked her up and rode her the last few miles home." After such scary experience Liz does not travel Darcy anymore, so PSO has become a great activity for the pair, "I first entered PSO in July 2010 and came 3rd in the best lightweight class. Because of our travel problems, PSO is a great way to compete."

Liz does however still hack to their local show to take part in Ridden Hunter and Dressage, Darcy has even competed in handy pony, although she didn't really take to this!

Darcy lives in a livery yard, on full livery, Liz however says "I go 5 days a week rain or shine. Even though it is full livery when I'm there I do most of it myself, it's part of owning a horse." Liz is married with two grown up children and works part-time for a company that makes and installs electrical control panels.

Liz is definitely on the lookout for more Absorbine products now, as never having used them before she is looking forward to trying out her new bottle of ShowSheen Continuous Spray!

Erin Shaw's Monsoon is the winner of this Month's Absorbine Sponsored www.photo-shows.co.uk (PSO) Best Turned Out Class In the March Best Turned Out Class, the standard was exceptionally high. The judges had a really tough job to pick the winner out of an astounding 28 entries. Online Photo-Shows (PSO)are clearly going from strength to strength. Although its not hard to see why. The classes are well organised, the prizes are great and there are constant news updates for competitors on the PSO Facebook page. Monsoon looked beautifully turned out and is a worthy winner of a huge PSO rosette and bottle of SuperPoo from Absorbine. Erin, a Tactical Records Officer for Virgin Atlantic has owned the 7 year old 14.3hh Monsoon for nearly five years. Monsoon is a part-bred New Forest pony and it is pure chance that Erin came to own her. Erin says "I wasn't really looking for a horse, but I was browsing Horsequest one day, and there was Monsoon's advert, so I emailed for more information - the more pictures I saw, the more I liked her, so two days later I made the 2 hour journey to see her after work as I was worried that someone might get there before me!" Erin is very glad to have found PSO as Monsoon injured her tendon last September and it has taken a long time for her to recover, it looks as though she will miss most of the summer shows. So PSO is great as it still allows them to compete. Erin hopes to be back competing at showing and dressage once Monsoon is back to full fitness. Last season before Monsoon injured her tendon, they did a couple of County Shows and also had some good scores at Prelim Dressage. As soon as Monsoon is better the plan is to pick up where they left off, and aim for some HOYS qualifiers next year and move up a level in dressage.

Erin says "Monsoon is happiest when covered in mud and poo! So it generally takes 2 shampoos to get her show clean". Hopefully the bottle of SuperPoo will come in handy! Early Success For Team Bardo

Jayne Webber and Carol Bardo took their talented team of horses to the British Show Horse Association Southern Spring Show at Crofton Manor Equestrian Centre. This show held on the 26th March was the first 'proper' show of the season for Carol and Jayne so the pressure was on to do well!

It turned out to be a spectacularly successful day, with four horses qualifying for the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead. Cobs Darcey Bustle and The Keystone Cob both won their respective classes and then went on to be Champion and Reserve Champion Cobs. Berkeley Square and Comberton Clancy went on to do exactly the same in the Riding Horse class.

The success continued on into the novice classes, with the team winning two of the three classes. Pillowtalk won the Novice Hack class and Hannah Pavlova took the Novice Cob class before going on to be overall Novice Champion and then finally Reserve Supreme of the show. Comberton Clancy went one better and came in Supreme Champion of the show!

A great start to the season!

Inaugural PSO Prize Goes Down Under

The inaugural Absorbine sponsored photo-shows.co.uk best turned out class has been won by Australian Karen Hendley's pony stallion Sarahn Satalight.

Photo-shows.co.uk or PSO as its affectionately known by its members is the worlds premier online horse show. There are classes for champion show horses, ex-racehorses, a much loved family pet or anything in between.

Classes run from the 1st to the end of each month with full size rosettes to 10th place, sashes, trophies and more. With classes costing just £3 to enter, its easy to see why so many people are part of the phenomenon.

New for the February show was the Absorbine sponsored Best Turned Out class. It was a very hotly contested competition but the judges unanimously decided that Sarahn Satalight was the winner.

Karen bought Sarahn Satalight as a three year old from the USA, his breeding is Arabian pony cross Welsh section B. He is by Brampton Sinbad out of Richdale Shantilly. Karen frequently and successfully shows Sarahn Satalight in hand and he also stands at stud via AI each season. Showing victories for this lovely pony include champion led Arabian pony at the Royal Melbourne Horse Show.

Showing in Australia is very different from the UK, Karen says "we travel huge distances to shows, and have known some friends to travel a 7,000 mile round trip to compete at the Australian Championship!" Karen lives in the Otway Ranges area of Victoria where the temprature can get up to 40 degrees celsius in the summer. She owns a total of 13 horses all of which she looks after and trains herself. PSO is Karen's new hobby, at which she says "my beautiful horses have been lucky enough to be extremely successful at, and this is a wonderful and exciting passtime".

New ShowSheen - The Users Verdict

Laura Pyke, our tester of the new ShowSheen comes from the Vlacq Stud in North Wales. The stud is a family business, breeding both pure bred and anglo-arabs. Laura has tried out the new ShowSheen on all her animals....

"I've been busy washing tails and dressing manes with the new ShowSheen and its great! I've also done the collie and spaniel with it!

As we have Arabs, their manes are kept full and tails left natural. The outdoor horses inevitably get muddy tails and dreadlocks from the Welsh wind. The indoor ones get sticky tails as we are on rubber mats and half beds. I go along each row of four boex washing tails, rubbing down and spraying in the ShowSheen, then go back to the beginning with my trusty paddle brush and brushing through takes no time at all.

This stuff is great. Used dry on manes (too cold still to bath!) it lets tangles slide out without pulling out hairs, and applied to towel dried tails it gets all the twists and scurfy skin out just as easily. And it ensures grime slides off for a good few days as well, meaning fewer dreadlocks and longer between the washes.

The silent sprayer is great for the babies and any reactive sorts. Product smells great too and I've even dropped the can a couple of times and it seems indestructable!

I will be using it on the broodmares close to foaling to make cleaning up after the happy event (and covering) easier, and on the foals' tails in case of scouring.

Its also great on the feathered horses (we have 2 section C's) to get their legs in showring shape after a long winter out, and also prevent them bringing in half the arena surface after a workout. I would have thought it would be a must for people with M&Ms and coloureds with white legs!!

So yes, while I will be adding one to my show kit box for those finishing touches, I'll also have one in my maintenance kits in each vehicle (hoofpick, hairbrush, fly spray, sun block, eye cream, wound spray and now ShowSheen).

Come June/July/August I know I can brush all the horses lega and chests down woth it and keep the nasty bot eggs away too... And then we will be back into autumn/winter tail damage limitation and washing again, ready for the worst the Welsh weather can throw at us!"

Sussex Lusitanos at the Golega Fair, Portugal

Golega, Portugal has been home to the Golega horse fair since the 18th century. Thousands of people gather here every November to experience the fantastic atmosphere and share their love and appreciation of the Lusitano. Our sponsored riders, Sherene and Leila Rahmatallah, of Sussex Lusitanos, were there with their competition mares, both pure-bred Lusitanos, thirteen-year-old Quota and seven-year-old Xanaia. Read all about it in this post written by Leila.

"The fair takes place each November in a sleepy town called Golega, just 1.5 hours north east of Lisbon, and for two weeks this town really comes alive! It's full of horses in every nook and cranny and has a big sand track, where horses parade by day and night. Inside this track is a large central arena where equestrian displays and competitions take place throughout the day and in the evening.

Temporary restaurants and bars pop up all over the town and the smell of roasted chestnuts fills the air, just adding to the magical atmosphere here. Every year we organise a large group trip of British people to see the fair. We also took two other purebred Lusitanos that were bred in Ifold to the Golega fair - both geldings (Quejaz, a thirteen-year-old and Acaso, a five-year-old). Both by our successful stud stallions, Quejaz is by Caju and Acaso is by Numerario - both stallions stand in Ifold, West Sussex.

The horses were in Portugal for two weeks and, as the weather was warm, we used both SuperPoo and ShowClean on our mares to keep their coats in top condition. We also used Hooflex to keep their hooves moist and supple, as it was quite dry out there. During November the flies can still be quite bad for the horses so the surfaces of their premises were sprayed with UltraShield to keep the bugs away. On Acaso and Quejaz, I used ShowSheen Moisturising Detangler Gel on their tails to keep them smooth and silky as they were plaited and left down whereas our mares were plaited and tied up in a knot (similar to polo). Every day when they were prepared and tacked up, I finished them off with ShowSheen spray on their coats and they looked very smart. Many people commented on the turnout - we rode in traditional dress and often rode around as a group - 4 ladies which looked very smart.

Golega horse fair is a special event for us. For 17 years we have taken our own Lusitanos to put forward a British representation out there. We very much look forward to the fair every year-it is a place where you see the true Lusitano horse within a very special atmosphere!"

Rare & Native Breeds Exhibition

Earlier this month, Nichola Ash, from The Fell Pony society, contacted us to see if we could donate some product for their fund-raising raffle at the Rare & Native Breeds exhibition. We were only too pleased to help out, as ever since we saw our sponsored rider, Jo Bates, riding and producing Denise Bumford's champion fell, Hamish, we've had a real soft spot for these hardy ponies.

The Native & Rare breed exhibition, held on the 13th and 14th of November at the Newark Showground, was introduced to support the wonderful animals that have shaped the British Isles over thousands of years. The show has a fantastic turnout of native and rare breeds, craftsman and women, experienced show competitors, breed societies, animal charities, bygones, and much more.

During the weekend demonstrations take place inside and outside in the show rings with the exhibitors themselves giving advice, breed information and educational facts about their much loved breed. The Fell Pony society also paraded their ponies three times a day!

Grooming solutions with Molly O'Brien

Well, we can’t deny it any longer. The winter is upon us and the cold weather is already here. Muddy fields, frosty mornings and numb toes are, once again, part of our every day lives. And, as every horse owner knows, mud plus cold, wet, weather equals grooming misery! But, before you panic, read this blog. Absorbine’s very own grooming expert, Molly O’Brien, has some brilliant solutions to keep your winter grooming problems at bay.

MUD

Molly says: “I always say ‘prevention is better than cure’, and this is certainly the case when it comes to grooming. Using ShowSheen can actually help to repel dust and dirt, as it contains silicone which can help to prevent the mud from sticking. But, if your horse is caked in the stuff then the first step is to let the mud dry. Unfortunately, short of rinsing your horse off with a hose, or trashing more towels than you can imagine, there’s no good way to remove wet mud. For dry mud, you should start with a good curry comb, using it in the traditional circular patter. Be careful not to use it on the face or below the knees and hocks. For those sensitive areas, use either a specially designed soft curry, or a soft brush. Then, if necessary, use a shedding blade, followed by a stiff body brush. Some sensitive horses hate the curry comb and if this is the case for you then you should invest a couple of pounds in a cactus cloth or grooming mitt. These do a real ‘hands-on’ job and are great for removing the mud – even from the face and legs. A soft body brush comes next, to remove the dust, then wipe over with a cloth and a spray of ShowSheen to add a nice, finished shine.

TANGLED MANES AND TAILS

Molly says: “Your approach depends on the cause of the tangled mess, if it is wet mud, then it’s best to let it dry first, then break out big clumps of the dirt by hand. You don’t want to apply anything liquid until those clumps are gone, lest you bring the mud back to life! Then, apply some ShowSheen Moisturising Detangler liberally through the hair, from top to bottom. Next, take a wide-tooth comb and start from the bottom, gently combing out those tangles. But take your time - don’t tug or pull – as breaking the hair is a cardinal sin!”

STAIN REMOVAL

Molly says: “To remove stains, your best bet is to use a cleaning product specifically designed for horses. Horse’s skin is very sensitive, especially in terms of PH balance, so using a generic shampoo or bar soap can disrupt it, leaving your horse more prone to skin infections. When it is too cold for a bath, use Miracle Groom (nicknamed the ‘bath in a bottle’!) It has a patented 5-in-1 formula and is designed to remove stains with out the need for any water. It’s even safe for all long and short hair animals!

HOYS is the climax of the showing year, but the event is worlds apart front the average county show. So how do you prepare to give your best performance at the showing world's premier event? We caught up with golden girl of the showing ring, Jayne Webber, who had some fantastic results this year, to find out how she prepared for the big occasion.

How do you keep your horses fresh at the end of a busy season?

It is very easy for horses to become jaded during the showing season, particularly if they have been driven all over the country in order to qualify for the championships. We turn all the horses out in the field regularly and often they will be out the night before a show. This gives them time to completely relax and unwind. We also hack regularly in Windsor Great Park - in fact The Philanderer had been doing just that before he won the Supreme at HOYS last year! I will also give the horses a short holiday during the season, if I think they need it. It's all about maintaining a good balance.

How did you prepare your horses for the buzzy atmosphere at HOYS?

The atmosphere at HOYS is unlike that of any other show. The indoor arenas, the lights and sounds are all very different to an outdoor show, so it is important to acclimatise the horse to this by attending other indoor shows, particularly those with an evening performance. You could also try inviting friends to applaud during your schooling sessions?!?

How did you keep the horses coats looking great for HOYS this year?

Top tips for dressage turnout with Holly & Jo Bates

Time for some top-tips from our sponsored rider, Jo Bates. As well as her amazing showing acheivements, Jo has a proven track record in the dressage arena having first been attracted to the sport when, at thirteen-years-old, she saw Domini Laurence ride San Fernando in a dressage demonstration at HOYS.

Inspired by the performance, Jo acquired Scotch Royale from the Countess of March and at fourteen and fifteen-years-old was considered one of the top young riders in GB. She was a member of the Young Rider dressage team in 1977 and in 1978 and Junior Dressage Champion in 1978.

Jo has passed on her talent for producing horses to her daughter, Holly, who rides beautifully and has already seen success in dressage, finishing 4th in Elementary National Dressage Championships riding Silver Lining and becoming the 2006 Search For A Star Dressage Champion.

With their combined expertise in the show ring and the dressage arena, the Bates' turnout is always immaculate. Read on as Jo and Holly share tips and advice on dressage turnout and comment on the latest trends.

"Turnout in dressage is much the same as showing, but fashions and trends change and, in some ways, the look is more exaggerated for dressage. The current trend in dressage is for plaits that stick up on the neck - which are known as Anky-Plaits. As in showing, these will help to accentuate the front end and perhaps give the impression of a more uphill way of going - but it depends on the shape of the horse," she explains.

The fashion for masses of tiny plaits, wrapped in white tape is certainly old-hat, with today's look requiring fewer, large plaits. "This is the opposite of what we are now seeing in showing, where people are putting in more plaits, which are a lot smaller than they used to be," Jo explains.

Tails are now left fuller and longer in dressage and it isn't unusual to see them almost to the ground. Jo says, "You will often see that professional riders pull the top two-three inches of the tail to keep them neat, but leave the rest of the tail full, unlike showing where the tail is pulled much lower to give a 'waisted' look.

"Longer, fuller tails are easy enough to maintain - you just need a detangler gel like ShowSheen Moisturising Detangler. Just a tiny amount is easy enough to keep the whole tail tangle free."

Jo also uses the detangler gel around the eyes and muzzle to add the finishing touch. To black the dressage horses' feet, Jo uses SuperShine Hoof Polish ,"the shiny finish looks great", she says.

When it comes to the most noticeable dressage trends - bling is in. And, while it may be frowned upon in the showing ring, it certainly adds a bit of pizzazz in the dressage arena. Holly explains, "We use diamante brow bands and you can get some beautiful rolled leather bridles. Patent leather nosebands are also stunning. White numnhas, often together with a 3/4 fluffy numnah, and black leather tack is the preference of most riders and does look stunning."

"You want your horse to gleam, and Absorbine SuperPoo and ShowSheen do a fantastic job of keeping their coat clean and shiny and their tails tangle free. It's all about that first impression you give the judge. If they see a nice, shiny horse, beautifully turned out, and the rider with a well fitted jacket - looking clean and smart, they will have this in mind as they give their first mark," explains Jo.

HOYS & The Showing World Awards

We've just returned from another fantastic Horse of the Year Show! Our sponsored rider, Jayne Webber, had some great results including; sixth place in the Supreme Horse Of The Year Show Championship with The Humdinger, third place with Berkeley Square in The Richard and Lisha Leeman Small Riding Horse, fourth place with The Philanderer in The Stennett Family Large Riding Horse, third place in The Heavyweight Riding Cob Class and first in the The Coloured Horse and Pony Championship also with The Humdinger. Well done Jayne!

There was also the brilliant Showing Council/Showing World Awards held on Thursday 7th October. Our Absorbine Home & Away Award went to Nia Marshalay, a former Miss Wales!

Nia works extremely hard backstage for producers Ron and Debbie Thomas and is responsible for getting the ponies and horses ready for the ring at most of the shows, especially BSPS Summer and Winter championship show, Horse of the year show and The Royal International Show. Looking after 25-30 ponies at one show takes so much organising, which she does amazingly!

HOYS 2010 - Top tips from Jayne Webber

It's that time of year again and HOYS is finally here!

First of all, we want to wish every Absorbine-user, facebook fan and Absorbine UK blog reader, headed for HOYS, the very best of luck. Don't forget your ShowSheen and we're sure your ponies will sparkle!!

Our lovely sponsored rider, the super talented show rider and producer, Jayne Webber, is off to HOYS this year with seventeen horses! Three of which are doing two classes - a total of twenty classes!! We also want to wish Jayne, and the team, the best of luck this year.

Jayne, who took the 2009 Horse Of The Year Supreme Championship title with Carol Bardo’s, The Philanderer, has some brilliant tips for the show ring, she explains:

"Always plait on the day of the show to keep them look neat. Small dainty plaits are for hacks and riding horses, while hunters can have slightly larger plaits.

"Bath your horse the day before a show. On the day, remove stable stains with a good quality horse shampoo such as ShowClean or SuperPoo. To finish off, whiten legs with a chalk block."

Big congratulations to the British Team for their fantastic performance at WEG! Laura Bechtolsheimer has made history once again, becoming the first Brit to win a World Equestrian Games silver individual medal and breaking the British international grand prix special record with 81.71%.

Our fantastic hair polish, ShowSheen, is also performing brilliantly at WEG, with the introduction of the new improved formula in a fabulous continous spray container. We are so excited that this will be coming to the UK soon - we'll keep you posted on its arrival!
